Step into The Espadrille This Summer2017-05-28
We became fans of MDS Stripes and its retro-chic sensibility after first discovering the brand in a local boutique. We loved their timeless, feminine, and casually elegant pieces, and (of course) found they paired perfectly with our flats. Soon after, we reached out to MDS Stripes about designing a shoe together, and immediately hit it off: Mark's signature look in both his home and his interiors centers around blue and white, so we centered the collaboration around MDS's signature blue and white stripe, and paired it with striking black accents for a graphic, summery look.
When we first began designing for this collaboration, we knew we wanted to create the perfect summer shoe: One that was comfortable, effortless, and versatile in how (and where) it could be worn. We passed countless sketches back-and-forth, finally settling on a breezy espadrille. The striped fabric on the shoe itself is sourced from a heritage fabric mill in Italy, and the shoes were finished at our Spanish factory - located in a region, interestingly, with a long history of Espadrille construction. In this way, we were able to marry Margaux's signature comfort and craftsmanship with MDS's modern take on the classic stripe.
The resulting espadrille is exactly that: It can just as easily be paired with a breezy sundress as with crisp white denim. It's comfortable enough to wear all day long, but refined enough to carry you out to drinks. Simply put - both flattering and comfortable in two classic colors, and with interchangeable ties in black grosgrain and MDS's stripe, it's wonderfully versatile.
In working with creative partners like MDS Stripes, we're eager to include fresh, inspiring perspectives in the brand. While we've collaborated with brands before on special products - on the Tome FW 2016 runway shoe, for example - The Espadrille was our first truly co-branded product. The process was a true collaboration: MDS brought a distinct design perspective to the table and so did we. We had so many ideas, but ultimately distilled them down to one elegant silhouette that was perfect for summer.
