Gaux Girl - Kat Irlin2016-09-23
The Gaux Girl - A series on brilliant women we’re privileged to count as friends.
No one quite embodies the idea of a “New York state of mind” like our dear friend and collaborator Kat Irlin. You may know her as @kat_in_nyc, the Instagram star whose penchant for capturing city life has amassed an enormous following both online and off. From Coney Island to Lincoln Center, Kat recently lent her unique vision to our lookbook shoot for our newly launched (and New York-inspired) pointed-toe flat, The Pointe. So you can imagine our excitement when she gave us the opportunity to turn the camera around and feature her life on the go.
In true gaux girl spirit and with only an hour to spare, we met with the busy photo maven on a sunny morning at Soho’s premiere new hotel 11 Howard, otherwise known as Kat’s go-to work venue when she’s not busy shooting. There, she showed us her sartorial spin on the Petite Leopard Haircalf and Port Velvet - two out of the four textures currently available in The Pointe collection. As you’ll see more of in this story, Kat’s looks truly embody the essence of the values The Pointe collection was built upon - functional style with a hint of city flair for the urban-sophisticate in New York... and of course beyond!
From finding her artistic voice to living and working in New York it should come as no surprise that Kat is truly a muse in our eyes. Read on to find out what keeps her going in the city that never sleeps.
"I love 11 Howard, it is the perfect location with an incredibly delightful staff - I feel lucky being able to work there whenever."
Meet our Gaux Girl:
My name is Kat Irlin and I am a photographer here in NYC.
Many people are drawn to New York’s enigmatic beauty, but what personally drew you to the city?
I came here 22 years ago from Saint Petersburg, Russia. I've always loved New York and I always will!
Walk us through the inspiration behind The Pointe lookbook shoot. We know that your work is very much rooted in New York, but after shooting the campaign did you see the city in a different light?
New York is my muse - it has so many moods and can be portrayed so many ways. It was a perfect backdrop for the Margaux campaign being that it's romantic, fast-paced, multifaceted and always beautiful.
From shooting at The New York Public Library to Eataly, what were some of your favorite moments from the shoot?
It was a great day. We were running all around the city with the shoes and clothes and it was really fun matching up each shoe with each location. We finished the day at Coney Island - it was magical because of the beautiful lights, we ended up going on a few rides after!
What is your quintessential look for Fall and how do you think the pointed-toe ballet flat fits in with the New York woman’s wardrobe?
I think the textures and colors of the pointed-toe flat go marvelously with Fall in NYC. I can just see how amazing those photos would look - which is always the first thought on my mind!
If we were to experience the ideal New York City day through your lens what would see?
My perfect New York day really depends on the weather and my mood. I love rain so if it were raining I would probably be out shooting all day. If it were sunny I might go to a museum or a movie and then out to dinner, but still find time to shoot. I never leave home without my camera.
What about fashion inspires you the most and is there any gaux girl in your life who is your style icon?
I honestly don't have an icon or a muse I am inspired by - I usually wear whatever I think looks best on me which is not necessarily always the right decision!
What does being "a girl on the go” mean to you and where do you hope you’re going next?
I am always on the go, always looking to achieve more, meet new people, learn new things and better myself. Career-wise I want to always keep growing and travel-wise my next destination is sunny Aruba!
Gaux and ___ work hard and don't take no for an answer.
