Behind the Scenes at The Heel Lookbook Shoot2017-04-23
Hello from Vandervoort Studio in Brooklyn! Today we’re sharing the inspiration behind our lookbook shoot for our newest collection: The Heel. After months of hard work - from product design and engineering, to fit trials and production - we're ready to bring this long-awaited silhouette to life on camera. With the launch of The Heel, we're taking a step (or a leap!) towards our goal of building out the modern woman's footwear wardrobe, while offering a chic answer to the age-old question, "Where the heck can I find a comfortable heel?"
Our brilliant all-female cast includes photographer Alexandra Nataf, stylist Lindsey Frugier, make-up artist Laura Stiassni, and model Mia Speicher - and of course, our co-founders Alexa and Sarah.
With Lindsey's eye for detail and Alexandra's editorial perspective, our goal was to capture the everyday wearability of the shoe - the characteristic that defined The Heel's form and design. We wanted these images to speak to the shoe's versatility: Whether paired with a dressed-down jean or a black slip dress, this is the heel you can wear anywhere, any time, for just a little lift.
While preparing for this shoot we pulled inspiration from a wide range of resources: androgynous-chic Jil Sander campaigns from the 1990s, Hannah Tveite’s stunning portfolio work for The Line, and architectural details of staircases and urban surfaces, to name a few. The end result? A look that was sophisticated, yet fresh; with a mood and setting that was both warm and approachable.
As we approach the brand's two-year anniversary in May, we can't help but look back on how far we've come since our very first shoot with Paul Maffi and Sam Traina in the spring of 2015. The brand has certainly grown since our first shoot in Dune Studios - from the size of our team, to the range of products we carry - and yet we've still managed to maintain our signature focus on delivering a comfortable and tailored fit without sacrificing aesthetics.
There are few moments in our world more exciting than "shoot day" for a new collection, but this moment feels particularly special: It marks an exciting milestone as we "climb to new heights," so to speak, and bring to life our vision for the perfect heel!
