Gaux Girl - Alexis Maybank2017-06-25
The Gaux Girl - A series on brilliant women we’re privileged to count as friends.
Alexis Maybank is fueled by the possibility of discovery, and with a great pair of ballet flats on foot, she’s always ready to take on the city streets. Aside from her refined sense of personal style, you probably know our featured gaux girl best for her role as Founding CEO of Gilt Groupe. Most recently, her business acumen and tasteful eye for fashion led to the creation of Project September.
At a time when content is king, Project September's platform enables tastemakers to blend content and commerce to make their visual creations shoppable. There is always something new to discover, and with the app's streamlined interface, it’s particularly useful for browsing on the gaux.
Earlier this season, we met with this industry leader in her element at the Project September headquarters. After touring the office, we took a late afternoon stroll along Park Avenue. During our walk, we chatted with Alexis about business and smart design - the perfect pair, if you ask us.
Read on to meet Alexis who showed us her bold sartorial take on our Classic Ballerina in Pink Python.
Meet Our Gaux Girl:
At Margaux, we are advocates for smart design. With Project September’s signature green dot in mind, what does smart design mean to you and how would you say it plays a role in Project September’s mission?
Smart design is the foundation of Project September. Our platform is a marketplace for the world’s greatest editorial geniuses to show their fashion and design expertise, and instantaneously allow followers to purchase any and all items they aspire to own directly from a photo. My co-founder, Leah Park and I built a clean, simple interface that allows the content to tell the story and read like an immersive, digital magazine.
What role do ballet flats play in your wardrobe and what are a few things that are currently fueling your desire for discovery?
There is nothing more inspiring than walking around New York City especially during fashion weeks, film festivals, weekends in the West Village or during the weekday commute. New York is a great walking city and a great city for discovering fashion, design, and inspiration all around. A great pair of ballet flats is key to make sure that I can be all over the city throughout the course of a day.
What do you think is the most interesting synergy between fashion and business?
Fashion is one of the fastest changing industries globally; which makes it an incredibly exciting area to work. Add technology, and the pace of change is even faster. With innovation and new ideas, the pace is only going to pick up speed - this is very interesting to me.
How do you like to spend your off-duty days and where in the city can we find you exploring this season?
My days off are with my three kids and all of their weekend activities. Whether it's time spent in New York's Central Park, the Botanical Garden or rock climbing in Long Island City or soccer we are always on the move.
What does being "a girl on the go” mean to you and where do you hope you’re going next?
It means I have to be dynamic, curious, and always learning, but most importantly always moving forward. At Project September we always want to discover and feature the newest talent and inspiring designs in fashion and beauty. So in the end, I must make sure that I am always continuing to explore.
Gaux and be curious. Explore life!
