Five Looks We Love for Winter Weather2018-12-01
The arrival of a new season heralds a shift in our go-to looks — and when that happens, we can always count on the stylish women around us for inspiration. Winter’s chilly temps and brisk breezes can make it easy to rely on denim and cozy parkas, but there’s no reason winter needs to be less colorful - or stylish - than her warmer sisters.
In fact, past Gaux Girls have proven particularly excellent fodder for winter outfit inspiration: Each woman’s personal style comes to life in looks we’d happily copy. When browsing our image archives for wintry favorites, we also realized that almost all were grounded by a great pair of flats.
While we’ve recently introduced boots, loafers, heels and more, the essential flat is the cornerstone of our collection - and we still have a difficult time imagining a more perfect shoe. Sleek and classic, it embues any look with confidence and (of course) comfort.
Here are five favorite looks from the Gaux Girl archives:
1. Double up on velvet
Sumptuous velvet literally feels amazing when the temperatures start to dip. Claire Chan, the Vancouver-bred proprietress of West Village coffee shop The Elk, made The Pointe in velvet stand out by pairing them with wide trousers in the same soft fabric. To avoid the richness of the double dose from being overwhelming, keep the rest of your outfit simple. We love how she went with the trustiest of basics – a white crewneck tee – to complete it.
2. Wear your whites
By now we’ve all abandoned any notion that white past Labor Day is forbidden, yet figuring out how to incorporate the hue isn’t always easy. Copy designer Nikki Kule, and wear white pants with layers (in her case, a long-sleeve tee in her signature stripes and an oversized schoolboy blazer). The Demi in black – a classic’s classic –provided punchy contrast to her look.
3. Add cheerful pops of personality
We love it when a look screams panache and personality, and no one’s exemplified that better than illustrator Angelica Hicks. She layered straight-leg jeans under a vividly trimmed dress and a leopard print coat. When others might have finished with a simple shoe, Angelica added one final twist: The Classic in Saffron, a cheery marigold yellow hue.
4. Pair neutrals with neutrals
Leopard is a neutral and One Kings Lane founder Susan Feldman is on board, wearing spots wrist to ankle for an breezy West Coast winter look. A strong all-over-print moment like this is where The Classic in Cacao - a neutral beige - really shines. The flat’s elegant shape and shade blend in beautifully, allowing her dress to have its moment.
5. Travel in style
Our mind goes to travel as the holiday season shifts into full gear, and no one has inspired our plane, train, and automobile look more than Maman owner Elisa Marshall. She paired skinny black pants with a pretty patterned wrap (a hero carry-on piece). The Pointe in black cemented as the ultimate chic-but-comfortable look.
